OpenStudy (sasogeek):

differentiate the function \[\ y=(3x+4)^{2} \]\ using the chain rule, i got 6(3x+4) but my book says 6(3x+1) ... who is right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You

OpenStudy (turingtest):

yup ;)

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Sue the publisher. You can become rich.

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

should i keep using that book? it has many examples i want to solve but this one and it's solution just seemed odd

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Sure as long as you have us to verify your work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It happens to all books. They sometimes have wrong answers. If they have a lot of incorrect answers you should stop, but otherwise it should be OK.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Every book should come with errata.

OpenStudy (earthcitizen):

typo error mayb

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

well this is the 3rd one, the other two, i checked with my friend's answers, we had the same thing but the book was just wrong, but i've solved more than 200 questions from this book with many right answers other than these 3 so far

OpenStudy (turingtest):

a book is only viable if\[\frac{\text{errors}}{\text{pages}}\le 0.127\](excess-typo theorem)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Seems like a very unreliable book to me

OpenStudy (slaaibak):

aka less than 1 mistake total in 8 pages :D

OpenStudy (turingtest):

that's generous!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or one problem out of 8 per page.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why study from book OCW single variable is the best introductory calculus course that I have seen.

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

it's just a book with thousands of problem sets and examples on many topics and my teachers recommend it because of it's many examples...

OpenStudy (earthcitizen):

does OCW have intro complex numbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For book I like Thomas calculus, it's the best book that I have seen.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you mean complex analysis? @EC

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

I would say it's more important for a book to have good explanations of the concepts rather than necessarily have all the answers printed correctly. But I agree, if there are too many mis-printed answers then it can put you off track.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If asnaseer writes a book I will buy it.

OpenStudy (earthcitizen):

yh sound similar

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

sasogeek would be the editor and reject all my mis-printed answers :)

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

it's concepts are laid out correctly and explanations are just okay though i must say, they only seem to mess up with some answers

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

lol asnaseer

OpenStudy (earthcitizen):

yh I guess it's called complex analysis @FFM

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha asnseer and we will ask myin to do the proof-reading

OpenStudy (asnaseer):

no - myininaya should be the illustrator :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@EC:I never searched, sorry.

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

hahahahaha so true asnaseer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha :D

OpenStudy (earthcitizen):

yh no p

OpenStudy (turingtest):

http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/#mathematics there are a couple of 'complex variables' classes I assume those are the same thing

OpenStudy (earthcitizen):

nice link @ TT, new stuffs too
