How do I add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators?

OpenStudy (hoblos):

you change the denominators

OpenStudy (ragingsquirrel):

I'll write up a example.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

least common multiple you change the denominators so they are equil when you do this you also must change the numerator however EX 1/2-1/3 the least common multiple is 6 so it becomes 3/6-2/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

by making the denominators equal by multiplying

OpenStudy (ragingsquirrel):

|dw:1327948456979:dw| 2/8 Could be divided into 2. Making it 1/4.

OpenStudy (ragingsquirrel):

So the answer to my example would be 2/4.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

NO U DONT HAVE TO MULTIPLY THAT CAN MAKE IT A LOT HARDER THAN IT NEEDS TO BE for example if you have 5/6 + 3/12 you can just multiply both the numerator and denominator of 5/6 by 2 and you get 10/12+3/12

OpenStudy (ragingsquirrel):

Hinkey, that IS multiplying...
