Factor the trinomial. 16 – 6y – y^2

OpenStudy (aroub):

-y^2-6y+16 y^2+6y-16 (y+8)(y-2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it's telling me it's wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Going step by step, you know the y^2 is negative, so it will factorise as (a+y)(b-y). Now just find two numbers, a and b, so that when you expand it you get 16-6y-y^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did that make sense so far? And, can you do the next step or do you need a clue?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im gonna take another shot at it. i was mixing around a few numbers before but i couldn't get anything to work

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember that (y+_)(y+_) will always give you a positive y^2, so to get a negative y^2 you need (_+y)(_-y).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Where _ just stands for random numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also notice that a and b will have to multiply to make 16, which makes your choices quite simple.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(8+y)(2-y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Perfect!

danka

If you want to do it a different way, do what aroub did earlier by multiplying by -1, but remember at the end that you need to times one of the factors by -1 to get a -y in there :D

You're most welcome :D
