I believe that the video is easier to understand. Once you've gotten a full grasp of the basics, try reading the PDF file.

Nice links. The "thesis" of the PDF file, however, is an entire document, written at the university level. The slides deal with parts of the thesis statement itself, typically a one-sentence statement that directs the focus and structure of a short paper.

Although Linda has said "thesis" and not "thesis statement," she might well be referring to the latter and not the former?

Still what is a thesis without a solid thesis statement? Knowing the the mechanics of writing a thesis and knowing the mechanics of developing your thesis statement go hand-in-hand.

Well, yes, but it depends upon what level the writer is working at. Most high school students are writing short papers, and when they ask about a "thesis" they mean the thesis statement. When university students speak of a "thesis," they are generally referring to the 80+ page document produced as part of the masters degree or a doctorate.

That was my only point. An 8th or 9th grader, or even a senior high school student, is not going to get much out of the 33-page document that addresses the structure of a university-level thesis, if looking only to better understand how to write the single-sentence controlling statement for a short paper.
