A right triangle has one side of length 11and a hypotenuse of length 12. How long is the third side of the triangle?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

hi, do you know Pythagoras theorem?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

we are given that hypotenuse is 12 in length and one side is 11 , we need to find the third side . let it's length be x |dw:1328028599813:dw|

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Countrychick do you know Pythagoras theorem? if you tell me I'd be able to help you better

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know what that is.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its of the form: a^2 + b^2 = c^2 where a and b are legs of a triangle, and c is the hypotenuse

OpenStudy (amistre64):

|dw:1328029932334:dw|

OpenStudy (ash2326):

It states that hypotenuse's square is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides here \[12^2=11^2+x^2\] \[144=121+x^2\] \[x^2=23\] so the third side is \[\sqrt{23}\]
