I agree with sidmanfu, postmodern fiction would be around after 1930's? Detective fiction cannot be right. I think of Watson, but I'm not sure if that is victorian. Gothic fiction deals with the grotesque, particularly with what happened to Lily in House of Mirth. Just some thoughts, hopefully no spoilers.

Detective fiction is often considered to have been invented in the 19th century with the publication in 1868 of Wilkie Collins' _The Moonstone_. Detective fiction was wildly popular, as was gothic fiction, which began with Horace Walpole's _The Castle of Otranto in 1765. Gothic fiction was not born in the Victorian era, but it matured there.
