In fruit flies, the allele for ebony body color is recessive to the allele for brown body color. In a generation of fruit flies with 103 offspring, 51 males and 52 females had ebony bodies. Which of the following is the best conclusion you can make about the parents of this generation? Answer Both parents were heterozygous for body color. Both parents were homozygous with ebony bodies. One parent had an ebony body and the other was heterozygous for body color. One parent was heterozygous for body color and the other was

Do you have a guess or idea of where to start?

OpenStudy (cathyangs):

do you know what heterozygous and homozygous mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it B?

OpenStudy (cathyangs):

B is incorrect. I suggest you read up on genetic terminology (heterozygous, homozygous, recessive, dominate, etc) to truly understand what the question wants you to do. Do you know about Punnet squares? Think about the genotype and the phenotype.

OpenStudy (blues):

OK. Roughly half the flies have the recessive phenotype meaning they must have two recessive alleles. Because they got one recessive allele from each parent, that means that both parents have at least one recessive allele.

OpenStudy (blues):

Is that much clear? I'm not going to continue until you understand that much...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep i got it thanks

OpenStudy (blues):

Now consider the other half of the offspring with the dominant phenotype. Because some flies have this phenotype, you know that they must have at least one dominant allele which means that it must have come from either one parent or both.

OpenStudy (blues):

So you have two possibilities 1. Both parents have a dominant allele (in addition to their recessive allele). 2. One parent has one dominant allele and one recessive and the other is homozygous recessive. If it were option one, roughly three quarters of the offspring would have a dominant phenotype (do a Punnett square to convince yourself of this), so you know it must be option two. The genotypes of the parents are Rr and rr.

OpenStudy (blues):

Clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes , tyvm now im off to bed xD.
