OpenStudy (msmr):

Can somebody explain to me what Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism is? (RFLP)

OpenStudy (preetha):

I am waiting for Blues to respond.

OpenStudy (blues):

And I'm waiting for Preetha.

OpenStudy (preetha):

Not fair. You know this better than me, I think.

OpenStudy (preetha):

Or MSMR

OpenStudy (msmr):

true that.

OpenStudy (blues):

You start with a bunch of homologous DNA molecules. You treat them with a restriction enzyme which "digests" the DNA molecules by recognizing short sequences in the DNA and cleaving the backbones at those sites. You then run the fragments on a gel to separate them by size and transfer them to a membrane by southern blotting. Then you treat the membrane with a probe sensitive for DNA fragments of different lengths and see what binds. A RFLP occurs when the length of a detected fragment varies among individuals. This was a long time ago for me.

OpenStudy (preetha):

But I still don't know what it is.

OpenStudy (msmr):

I understood. Thank you!

OpenStudy (blues):

It was a lot more important before the gilded age of high throughput sequencing.
