Find the slope of the line through each pair of points. 1. A(2, 4), B(–2, –4) 2. F(–5, 1), G(0, –9) I never have understood slope. Help would be greatly appreciated.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For 2 points (x1,y1) and (x2,y2), the slope is calculated by: \[m=\frac{y2-y1}{x2-x1}\] Make sure you're consistent with which point you pick first and also with the signs of the coordinates.

Would you like to try one? I'll let you know how you did.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

slope is just a measure of how far something is leaning .... mathikers define slope in a consistent manner in order to be able to work with it as a number

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its the ratio formed by the change in height over the change in width; y/x

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the formula is nice; but you still have to do the steps of subtracting the points and stacking y/x
