can someone explain when i add/multiply exponents?

Let's say you have \[(x^8)*(x^3)\]
In this case, you add the exponents
\[(x^8)*(x^3)=x^{11}\]

If you have
\[\frac{x^8}{x^3}\], you subtract.
\[\frac{x^8}{x^3}=x^5\]

If you raise a power to a power, you multiply:
\[(x^8)^{3}=x^{24}\]

also when you take the square root, you divide by 2, say it were the square root of x^12, it would be x^6 because x^6 times x^6 = x^12 because you add the exponents
