I would think that you could just use x as a common denominator: \[10/x-2x/x-x ^{2}/x\] If you simplify this: \[10/x-2-x\] You just separate the terms out with a common denominator of x.

i understand your point about the common denominator but i dont see how you got 10/x-2-2

The entire top part of the expression is over x, correct? You can separate each top term so that each is individually over x. so, 10/x is one term, -2x/x is another, and -x^2/x is the third. The second two simplify.

The second term should be -2x/x = -2. It should be -2.
