What 5 things define your person and what you believe

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

This can only be answered by you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm, what are some examples?

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Religion, family values, hobbies or likes, peeves or dislikes, political stance.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh, okay thank you!

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

You're welcome. Sometimes it just takes a little nudge, huh?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How you behave can be character defining also.

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

We may be slipping into semantics by opening this argument, but I disagree Cryptic. How you behave does not define your character; your character defines the way you behave. ;)

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Re-reading that, it looks like a bumper sticker. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Post hoc ergo etc or ad hoc ergo etc?

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Post hoc, but not on my part. My logic is sound . . . I think . . .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes jagatuba, the more I think about this the more confusing the outcome. It becomes a very circular argument. Do I act this way because I am or am I this way because I act so? I think we may have to defer this one to the philosphy group and ask them to get back to us in a few years, if ever, with an answer. People will act contrary to their beliefs in all sorts of circumstances, some good and some not so. I have enjoyed the thinking on it anyway, so give a medal for the question.

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

Yes it is a bit of a chicken and the egg dilema. And you are probably right in suggesting that this argument could go on for quite some time. However, let me add that when someone acts contrary to their beliefs, does this not suggest that there is a deeper belief at work here? Wouldn't this be a definition of our character? Unless there is a gun to our head, we do not do ANYTHING against our will. Therefore, doing something against your beliefs voluntarily would mean that there is another belief or motivation at work causing you to make that decision.
