show the conjuncture is false by finding a counterexample: the square root of a number x is always less than x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A counter example is meets the if and breaks the then. So here you need to find the square root of a number that is not less than itself. sqrt 4 is 2 so that doesn't work...keep thinking and hopefully you'll get it...think fractions or decimals

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm it seem this is a hard question...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to elaborate, x=4 is a true example because the sqrt of 4 is less than 4. however this statement is not absolutely true. not hard just tricky...grab a calculator and try some numbers

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe try something between 0 and 1 wink, wink, nudge, nudge

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm i guess i have to use my exhausted brain cells then sigh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did you get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually my computer calculator doesnt have a square root button on the scientific one..

you can also raise to the 0.5 power. a more simple example would be the sqrt of 1/4. 1/2 times 1/2 is 1/4 so 1/2 is the sqrt of 1/4 and 1/2 is bigger than 1/4 so that would be a counterexample. in decimals: sqrt 0.25=0.5 so if x=.25 that's a counterexample...no calculator needed although it'd be a good discovery method to just try out some ideas

hmm it sounds so simple when you say it like that
