The number of points in the sample space would be: if the first experiment can be performed in N distinct ways and a second experiment can be performed in m distinct ways, then the two experiments can be performed in that specific order in MxN distinct ways. Theoretical probability refers to the equally likely outcome an event has of occurring. The probability is the quotient of the number of outcomes favorable to the event and the total number of possible outcomes.

4 choices for first book, 2 for second and 2 for third. so by the "counting principle" there are \[4\times 2\times 2=16\] choices all together
