on a balance scale 3 apples and 1 banana exactly balance 10 plums. Also 1 apple and 6 plums balance 1 banana. How many plums will balance one banana?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I wrote two equations relating the masses of apples (a), bananas (b) and plums (p). 3 a + 1b = 10p 1a + 6p = 1b Can you solve this system of equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(or solve for a relationship between mass of the bananas and plums) (aka number of plums (mass) = number of bananas (mass) )

I like 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i can solve with the equations thanks!

OpenStudy (radar):

Here is why: From first relationship given you can write 10 plums - 3 apples = 1 banana From the second relationship you can write when multiplying the equation by 3: 3 apples + 18 plums = 3banana. Now writing them to see how they look 3 apples + 18 Plums =3 banana -3 apples +10 Plums = 1 banana Now add these two equations ------------------------------ 28 Plums = 4banana divide thru by 4 7 Plums = 1 banana

OpenStudy (radar):

Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (radar):

Please note we are talking about weight (balance scale) we are not adding apples and plums lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thankyou and yes!

Good luck with your studies.
