OpenStudy (kingj):

A lottery winner must decide between two methods of payment. Choice one is to receive a lump sum of $100,000,000. Choice two is to begin with one cent on day 1, three cents on day 2, nine cents on day three, and so on until the end of 22 days. Part 1: Which choice should the lottery winner select? Part 2: Using complete sentences, explain the procedure taken to answer this question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

compare \[1+3+3^2+3^3+...+3^{22}\] with \[100,000,000,000\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first number is \[\frac{3^{23}-1}{3-1}\] which is probably much much larger

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

practically...the lottery winner should pick the second choice...if he gets it full...there's a high chance he'll die (if you know what i mean)...but that's practically...dunno about mathematically :))) just wanted to share my opinion

OpenStudy (kingj):

So the answer would be... what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it shoul be end 3^21

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$5,230,176,601

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5,230,176,601 actually this is how many cent there is, so we need to divede by 100 to get dollar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

52,301,766.01 if you choose second choice you will get this amount of money which is lower than firts one..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually it should end in 23

OpenStudy (anonymous):

47071589413 cents $470,715,894.13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it must be end in 21
