is light made up of atoms and elements?•Explain the relationship between matter, atoms, and elements. •Distinguish between elements and compounds. •Describe molecules, and explain how they are formed. •Interpret and write some common chemical formulas. •Categorize materials as pure substances or mixtures.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Light is made up of photons, which are not atoms.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

light is made up of tiny particles which exhibit light and any color is not of one particle it is a mixture of different color particles which mix up to form a beautiful one

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Ok. Now, all of ordinary matter--you, me, the table, the air, the water in the oceans--is made of atoms. An atom is one of the more basic units of matter. For a long time, people thought atoms were the smallest unit of matter; in fact, that's what the word means in the original greek. If you have a collection of atoms all of the same sort, that is an element. For example, if you had pure copper, like in a copper tube in plumbing, that's an example of the element copper. If you have pure helium in the helium, that's an example of the element helium. There are over 100 elements. On the earth, most of these in something close to their pure form are either gases (such as helium, oxygen, nitrogen) or solids (such as copper, iron, carbon).

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Molecules are combinations of atoms of different elements. One of the most important is something you need to live: water. A water molecule is made up of three atoms: two hydrogen and one oxygen.
