An ant carries food at a speed of 1cm/s. How long will it take the ant to carry a cookie crumb from the kitchen table to the ant hill, a distance of 50 m? Express your answer in seconds, minutes and hours.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

So how many seconds does it take the ant to travel 1 meter?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10 seconds.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

No. There are 100 cm in a meter.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Leave the answer in seconds for now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh yeah. So 100 centimeters is 100 seconds

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Right and hence how long for 50 meters?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5000 seconds.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Right. Now convert that into hh:mm:ss

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Hint: 1 hour = 60 minutes = 60x60 seconds = 3600 seconds

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Therefore 5000 seconds = 1 hour + mm minutes and ss seconds.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My answers aren't making sense.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Well subtract out one hour and we have 5000 - 3600 = 1400 seconds. Now how many complete minutes are there in 1400 seconds?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

23

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Right, so 5000 seconds = 1 hour + 23 minutes + ss seconds. What's the remainder, the number of seconds, ss?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20

OpenStudy (jamesj):

right.

Thanks!
