If we have 12 numbers whose sum is 144, then at most how many of them can be negative? Please explain.

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

what grade are you if i may ask?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since the sum is positive so only 11 number can be negative.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8th grade

Yes shankvee is right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please can you explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See the sum is postive if i have 12 negative numbers and i add them up i'll get a negative number. But if I have 11 negative numbers then i can make the 12th number such that the sum becomes 144 and it is pretty clear that the 12th number has to be positive.

OpenStudy (sasogeek):

when you add negative numbers you get a negative answer, the final result we want to get here is positive so the maximum negatives u can have is 11 so that the last positive number can nullify all of them and still have your positive answer :) i believe this is the explanation :P

Say the some of 11 negative numbers is -100 then the 12th number can be 244 (100+144). The 100 will cancel -100 and 144 will give you some 144 and this is true for any negative sum. If all numbers are negative then the will be negative

i got it.Thanks you so much for explaining me.

sorry some*=sum
