i need help Explain how the formula for the area of a triangle is derived from that of a rectangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a rectangle is length times width. but with a triangle it is length time width divided by 2

dose that sound good ??

half the area of the rectangle

That approach (half a rectangle) seems to be a convincing argument only for a right triangle's area. How do you extrapolate to a non-descript triangle's area?
