The Stereoscope Have you ever been to an antique shop and seen a device that looked like binoculars, but with a wire stand mounted in front of the lenses? What you saw was probably a stereoscope. Most homes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century had one. The Stereoscope: Antique "Toy" The stereoscope is a device for viewing images - usually photographs. These images are really two similar pictures of the same subject, placed side by side and printed on one rectangular card. The cards are called stereographs. The images printed on stereographs are 2.5 inches apart - about the distance between the eyes. When viewers look through the lenses of the stereoscope, the two images appear to merge. What viewers see looks like one three-dimensional (3D) image. History The stereoscope was invented in 1833; however, it did not become popular until after the invention of photography. The first stereoscopes used drawings instead of photographs. But in 1849, Sir David Brewster improved the device, making it easier to use. He also invented a camera that took double pictures. People began using photographs instead of drawings. Oliver Wendell Holmes improved the design even further, and a new industry was born. Stereographic images were one way that people recorded and viewed historical events before newspapers included photographs. Stereographic images appeared to leap out at the viewer, lending drama to the events. Stereographs showed a wide range of subjects. Among the most popular were photographs of national parks and the great Chicago fire. You can often find stereographs in antique shops.
