Figure PQRS shows the top view of a square box. The length of diagonal PR is (x + 6) units and the length of diagonal QS is (3x – 1) units. Which property of squares is used to write the equation (x + 6) = (3x – 1) and solve for x?

In a square all sides are equal and the edges are right angles. So, if you apply pythagorean theorem of right triangles and calculate the two diagonals, they will turn out to be equal because the 2 legs of each of the two right triangles are equal. Therefore, their hypotenuses should be equal. Therefore, the two diagonals must be equal.
