Is there any measures to overcome the smoking habit?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but my understanding is that even with those, the habit is difficult to break. The nictotine rewires the reward centers of the brain, and the addiction it sets up is every bit as strong as, perhaps even stronger than, that of cocaine or heroine.

Yes, would have to agree with Redwood Girl. Years ago I used to chew tobacco and it took me 4 years of trying to finally quit. I did not use any measures though. I do have a couple of friends though that quit using nicotine gum. They said it works. When every they feel a craving they just chew a piece of the gum and they're good.

Quitting multiple times, only to pick the habit up again, and struggling to be rid of it for years is very common. It's great that you were able to quit! @ wanie_syaz, you might look for more info here -- http://whyquit.com/whyquit/linksaaddiction.html http://www.drugabuse.gov/drugs-abuse/tobacco-addiction-nicotine http://ehealthmd.com/content/what-smoking-addiction http://www.nicotine-anonymous.org/

I quit smoking, cold turkey, 12 years ago. I smoked my last cigarette on December 31, 1999. When the clock struck midnight, the year 2000, there was no more smoking. I had 7 cigarettes left in my last pack, and I never did smoke them. In fact, I have never "cheated," to this day. I think what helped me was the fact that the New Year was a significant date. If it had been December 12th, for example, I may not have felt so strongly about it. So, I suggest you pick a day that means something to you. Your birthday, or Easter day, etc., and make that day your quit day. Good luck!

Another thing that makes it difficult is being around others the smoke or chew. I worked at a race track when I was chewing and practically everyone there chewed tobacco. I would quit cold turkey in the off-season and would be fine until racing season started again. Inevitably I would end up 'bumming' a dip from someone and the next day I would have a can. That forth year I set my resolve to absolutely not bum a dip and I made it halfway through the season before I gave in, but now it tasted nasty and I haven't touched it since. And I have heard that for others before, that if you can make it for a certain length of time, it just tastes gross and you lose all the desire for it, but you have to make it to that point. For me it was about 9 month abstinent.
