State the slope of a line that is perpendicular to the line by each given function. y=-5x-3 y=x x=-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you find that?

OpenStudy (rulnick):

first find the slope (it's the m in y = m x + b form)

OpenStudy (rulnick):

the perpendicular slope is -1/m when the slope is m

OpenStudy (rulnick):

so for the first one it is 1/5 the second it is -1 the third it is y=0 (or y = any constant) ... this one is a special case

OpenStudy (rulnick):

... the special case is that for an undefined slope (x=constant) the perpendicular is zero slope (y=constant)
