How do I write an algebraic expression using the sieve of eratosthenes?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i dont htink the seive is algebraic, moreso its more of an algorithm

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you circle the lowest prime; and cross out all the number above it that it is a factor of; then the next number unscratchedout number on the list goes thru the same process

my daughter has homework that says she need to write an algebraic expression using the sieve of eratosthenes. Example she is to cross out every multiple of two and then write an algebraic expression for the numbers she crossed out

OpenStudy (amistre64):

every multiple of 2 is what: 2*n

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if there was an example to go by it be helpful; this does seem a bit vague to me tho

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't know. she has to use a number board 1-100. i was thinking 2x?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

2n; such that n>1 maybe

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the variable itself can have any name it wants; the name doesnt change it 2x is fine

OpenStudy (amistre64):

but you have to define what xs you use since you dont wanna cross out 2*1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here is an example of the problem. Circle the number 2 wit yellow. cross out evry multiple of 2 with yellow. Write an algebraic expression for the numbers you crossed out.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

"n"umber 2n such that n is a natural number greater than 1

OpenStudy (amistre64):

and less than 51 i spose :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok. I have no clue. thanks.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

\[2n\ \{n|n\in N: (1,51)\}\] you would have to define a domain of the ns you use so that you exclude 2*1 itself as a crossed out. and since you only go up to 2*50 max you can say you stopped with natrual numbers less than 51 other than that .... im at a loss as well
