Is the following relation a function? Two circles are shown, one labeled x and the other labeled y. The x circle contains the numbers 6, negative 1, 4, and 0. The y circle contains the numbers 2, negative 1, and 3. Arrows map numbers from x to numbers from y. There are arrows going from 6 to negative 1, from negative 1 to 2, from 4 to 3, and from 0 to 3. Answer Yes No

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A function is a mapping between the domain and range such that for every element in the domain, there is exactly one corresponding element in the range. Does every x value point to exactly one y value? If so, it's a function.

the answer would be no then

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which value of x maps to two different values of y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you are confused by the two values of x that map to the same value of y. All the values of x might map to the same value of y, and it could still be a function if there is only one value of y for each value of x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at it this way: Six maps to negative one. Negative one maps to two. Four maps to three. Zero maps to three. Each value of x maps to exactly one value of y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That means it is a function. Get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would it be a function? im lost.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If every x has exactly one y, it's a function.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK, look at it one at a time. The four values of x are 6, -1, 4, and 0. What does six map to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at your picture. If only one arrow comes out of each value of x, it is a function. This one is.
