Huge problem! I need to know how to convert rectangular coordinates to polar coordinates when x=0 ! please help! I know when x≠0 θ=tan^-1(y/x)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

when x=0; your just a radius on the y axis

OpenStudy (amistre64):

theta = 90 or 270 depending in the context ..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

given the context "find polar coordinates for each point" and the rectangular point is (0, 2)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

(r, t ) (2,pi/2)

how do you know that? like can you explain how you would find that θ=(pi/2)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the y axis is perpendicular to the x axis; when you turn 90 degrees from the x axis you hit the y axis

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright I see what you're saying now, thanks a bunch

OpenStudy (amistre64):

or mathic-ly (x=0,y=2) r = sqrt(x^2+y^2) r = sqrt(2^2) = 2 x = r cos(t) 0 = 2 cos(90) y = r sin(t) 2 = 2 sin(90) theta = 90

OpenStudy (amistre64):

but really, the logic of it all seems an easier route to me :) good luck
