(x+5)^2=10 what are the solutions for this equation?

OpenStudy (rulnick):

x = -5 + sqrt(10) or -5 - sqrt(10)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-5 + sqrt(10) or -5 - sqrt(10), this is because the square root is a a number which multiplied by itself yeilds that number. for 10, it is two positive or two negative numbers which square to 10

OpenStudy (amistre64):

get rid of the +5: -5 and then +-sqrt(10) will fit ... -5 +- sqrt(10)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are two answers correct?

OpenStudy (rulnick):

Yes indeedy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

here can you help me on this one x2 - 8x + 16 = 11

OpenStudy (rulnick):

x^2 - 8x +5 = 0 have you learned the quadratic formula? a=1, b=-8, c=5 ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not exactly

OpenStudy (rulnick):

x = ( - b plus-or-minus sqrt(b^2-4ac) ) / 2a ... sound familiar?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ha. I'm telling you now i didn't learn this. i glanced over a few things on the internet but i kept getting it wrong :I

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you haven't you can easily derive it, just complete the square
