"a 20n force applied to the handle of a door produces 44n output force. what is the ama of the handle?" i don't want the answer but can you like give me a formula for it?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

what does 'ama' mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actual mechanical advantage

OpenStudy (jamesj):

And what's the definition of it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the advantage of a real machine. it takes into consideration real world factors like friction

OpenStudy (jamesj):

By definition mechanical advantage, MA, is defined quantitatively as \[ MA = \frac{F_{out}}{F_{in}} \] Hence for your problem \[ F_{in} = 20 \ N \] and \[ F_{out} = 44 \ N \] Therefore MA = ... what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2.2 J?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

The units are not Joules. MA by definition is unit less. But yes, 2.2 is the value.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay. Thanks
