Ok, I believe you do it as follows: The equation to use is a proportion. Let x = the altitude. Then the proportion is 12/x = x/9. To solve, cross multiply and get x^2 = 108. Take square root of both sides and get x = \[\sqrt{108}\]. The square root of 108 can be expressed as \[\sqrt{36x3}\]. That simplifies to 6\[\sqrt{3}\]
