What is the mass of a falling rock if it hits the ground with a force of 147 Newtons?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The acceleration of a falling object is caused by gravity. Use the equation from the previous problem using gravity (-9.8 m/s^2) for the acceleration.

I am using the negative direction to be down. The force is in the downward direction also, so it will also be in the negative direction. The two negatives will cancel out to give you a positive mass. Or you can just use +9.8 m/s^2 with a positive value for the force.

I got 15 kg.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You got it. That's correct!

Thanks!
