it's when:
xy=k
where k is a constant
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I know that k s always the constant. But explain indirect or inverse variation
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Okay... so in indirect variation.. the x value decreases when the y value increases and vice versa.. in direct variation.. as one value increases so does the other:
inverse: xy=k
direct: x/y=k
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Can u do a problem using indirect variation-show me how to work it out if it is a word problem?? Thanks

it would be really nice help if you could

yeah sure.. what is it?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
lets say your problem is y varies inversely with x, and y is 34 and x is 14, find y when x is 18
OpenStudy (anonymous):
xy=k
34(14)=k
476=k
18y=476
y=26.444444444
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so youre basically dividing each side by 18?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yes... :)
