What is the meaning of a function with 3 variables. If all 3 variables are x, y and z, do we get volume or something physically different?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x,y) -> 2D (x,y,z) --> 3D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If z (f(x,y)) is a dependent variable, then yes. It's in R3 :-)

I'm going to retake linalg, my teacher was horrible and I had no tutor or anyone else to help me that could really explain the stuff :-(
