@jagatuba The following sentence is mostly a paraphrase with the exception of where I put my quotes. Should the page number of the citation go after the quotes or at the end of the sentence? According to Janssen (1998), patients “on a cancer ward” have found benefits with an animal therapy program (p. 42).

OpenStudy (jagatuba):

This is a good question because two rules apply. First rule is that no page or paragraph number is necessary for paraphrased material. So: According to Janssen (1998), patients have found benefits with an animal therapy program. AND Patients have found benefits with an animal therapy program (Janssen, 1998). are equally correct. The second rule is regarding quotes in mid-sentence which states: "End the passage with quotation marks, cite the source in parenthesis immediately after the quotation marks, and continue the sentence. Use no other punctuation unless the meaning of the sentence requires such punctuation" (APA Manual, 5th Ed, p. 121). (Note: I used the 5th Ed because I don't have my 6th Ed handy, but the rules regarding this are the same.) But this rule is specifically talking about a quote that is mid-sentence of ORIGINAL content, NOT paraphrased content. However, the solution is quite simple. Simply move your (p. 42) right after the quote and your citation will be correct. This is because: According to Janssen (1998), patients have found benefits with an animal therapy program. is correct for a paraphrase citation, AND According to Janssen (1998), [some original material] "on a cancer ward" (p. 42) [some other original material]. is correct for a mid-sentence quotation citation. So you can see that by putting the parenthetical part of the citation after the quote marks you have your bases covered on both rules. This was a good question because I really had to think about it. It's not a situation that is specifically covered in the APA manual.
