Why does tan 60 Degrees = sqrt(3)? Include Diagram. Thanks

OpenStudy (amistre64):

a few reasons really; for one, how the tangent function is defined; and B, from the triangle that we get a 60 from

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what kind of triangle has equal sides and equal angles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60-60-60 triangle

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good, then lets draw it up :) we also want to be familiar with the pythag thrm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

ill use a triangle with all side equal to 2 for simplicity

OpenStudy (amistre64):

how do we find the missing leg?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

that thing in the middle that is lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 * the sqrt(3).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome, but I dont understand your response x^2 + 1^2 = 2^2 x^2 + 1 = 4 x^2 = 4-1 x = sqrt(3) is our measure and knowing that we can apply the definition of a tangent to 60

OpenStudy (amistre64):
