I'll paraphrase. LaTeX is a markup, like HTML, used to typeset documents. It is a set of commands prefixed with a backslash("\"). This command indicate meta information about the text at hand and instruct the computer of render this meta information correctly. For instance if I had a mathematical idea that involved the fraction notation I could use the fraction command to render it. For example instead of typing the nonsensical x^2+5x+sqrt(43)/2x - 7, I could use LaTeX markup to make something more readable. I would first start with the \frac{}{} command where the two parameters are the numerator and denominator. Other than the square root which is rendered using the \sqrt{} command the rest of the text will render appropriately. The LaTeX markup \frac{x^2+5x+sqrt{43}}{2x - 7} will render into: \[ \frac{x^2+5x+\sqrt{43}}{2x - 7}\]

You should really read the primer and get a true appreciatioion for LaTeX.
