Solve for x. x^2+14x+4=0 I tried the quadratic formula and got super confused!

OpenStudy (mertsj):

a=1, b=14, c=4

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[x=\frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b ^{2}-4ac}}{2a}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am trying it again...give me one sec.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

computer randomly shut off...sorry.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[x=\frac{-14\pm \sqrt{196-4(1)(4)}}{2}=\frac{-14\pm \sqrt{180}}{2}=\frac{-14\pm6\sqrt{5}}{2}\] \[x=-7\pm3\sqrt{5}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok so far I have this \[-14\pm \sqrt{18}/2\]

OpenStudy (mertsj):

How did you get 18?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

196-4(1)(4)...I am telling you I don't get this stuff.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

What is 4(1)(4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry meant 16

OpenStudy (mertsj):

4(1)(4) is 16 and 196-16=180 NOT 18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha thats my bad...i just forgot to write down the zero on paper. LOL I feel stupid now.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

So now you understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think so...is that the answer then? Do I do any more steps?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide everything by 2

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Did you see what I posted? Those are the steps and the correct answers are shown.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok well thanks for working with me and helping me understand it more...

OpenStudy (mertsj):
