Can someone explain to me what my teacher wants me to do? Please complete this response in paragraph form. Describe the change that took place in the African slave trade in the 1500s (how it was different in the 1500s than before that time). Also describe the Middle Passage and its toll.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I can help, but I'm not sure if that's what you mean

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you in america?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I was going to ask.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am gonna assume she is

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Yea

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

This is World History

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea but where you learned it changes alot of stuff :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Exactly. :P I don't know if I can help, given that I only know the basic about US history, but I know a lot of world history, so...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, likewise to melinda i am learning world history but from a different view than the americans do and nearly every other country, so you could check this website http://www.brycchancarey.com/slavery/chrono3.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's nice, SS. Well, Life, if you want I can tell you about african slave trade by portugueses from 1500 on.

OpenStudy (rogue):

Is this a paragraph or a essay that you have to write?

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Paragraph

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

I just need to know what they want me to write because I'm not sure if I'm supposed to write about slavery or if I'm supposed to write about what happened before and after slavery.

OpenStudy (rogue):

Oh, okay =) SS gave you a great link for some of the events during the 16th century. Talk about how Spain & Portugal's involvement began the intensification of the slave trade. Compare it to how the slave trade was before during this time. Talk about the effects this had on the population in the western African coast. Be sure to talk about the slave mortality rates, the effect of the middle passage on their being, etc.

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Oh, thnak you all!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is the one for 1400's to 1500's http://www.brycchancarey.com/slavery/chrono2.htm

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Thank you :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anytime

OpenStudy (rogue):

Here's an article on BBC that may help as well. http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/abolition/africa_article_01.shtml

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

after 1500 in central america (mostly jamaica cuba) were selling a lot of slaves and affect is that now every one in spain america and england can get thouse slaves easier.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, if you will mention african slave trade, you should also write about how portugueses chose them instead of brazilian natives to ''work'' as slaves in the colony (because the church considered the natives ''pure'' people) and how cruelly african were treated (from 1500 on). Actually, slavery was very common among africans, because of war prisioners. But when portugueses wanted to profit Portugal and not the colony (in Brazil), they thought that african slave trade would boost the market and everything, so they would buy slaves in the coast or more likely, acquire slaves in exchange of brandy, smoke and stuff like that. They would bring africans to Brazil in order for them to work 18 hours per day in crops of sugar cane. Actually, half of them died during the trip because the conditions really sucked. I could go on and on about how bitterly Africans were treated by portugueses...

OpenStudy (lifeisadangerousgame):

Ohh, ok, thank you! :)
