Okay long one!!!!! In the attempt to form an equation that links absolute temp with KE there is a stage that I don't understand: start with pV=nRT pressure of an ideal gas given by kinetic theory pV=1/3Nmc^2rms (where rms is root mean squared) equat together 1/3Nmc^2rms=nRT The next stage is then to times both sides by 3/2 so to get 1/2mc^2rms=3/2(nRT/N). Then there is simple rearrangement to get the formula. I don't however understand why multiplication by 3/2 is needed as it makes no mathematical difference. And the only thing it achieves is to get in the form 1/2mv^2 which is the KE for
