The roots of a quadratic equation ax(square)+bx+c=0 are α and β. What does this mean? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alpha and beta are like variables. So they are two unknown values. (just like x, y, z, a, etc.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It means that the graph of the equation, y = a*x^2 + b*x + c, crosses the x-axis (x-intercept) at x = alpha and x = beta. Sometimes these are called your "roots of y" or "zeros of y."
