Can someone help me with subtracting fractions with like denominators?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

factor out the common denominator

OpenStudy (amistre64):

\[\frac{a}{d}-\frac{c}{d}=\frac{1}{d}(a-c)=\frac{(a-c)}{d}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in other words, just subtract the numerators and put the result over the same denimonator.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i think showing him algebra might confuse him...he might be a grade schooler you know :))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm only in 4th grade,please help me :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The thing is 43 5/12 - 27 3/7

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

one way you can do it is to transform both mixed fractions to immproper fractions..can you do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No I cant igbasallote

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Could you please help me with that? Thanks. I'm pretty stupid :3

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

first..it's Lgbasallote...and ok ill help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry :(

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

to transform to mixed...43 5/12 first multiply the denominator (12) by the whole number (43)..that gives you 516 (pls check not sure) then add the numerator (5) so the improper fraction is 521/12 try doing it in the second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm Okay I'll try, will you stay here, and are you a boy or a girl? My teacher is a girl :O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm let's see, 12x27=324 + 7 =331?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

331/12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Awh no,he/she left :((

OpenStudy (anonymous):

As for an answer I got 190/12,Is that right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

521-331=190

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

im sorry...i went and did something...why did you multiply 12 by 27? the mixed fraction was 27 3/7...and by the way im a guy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12x27?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was suppose to do that right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

first multiply the denominator (12) by the whole number (43

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Denominator= bottom number right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the other number is 27 7/12 I did 12x27

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then add the leftover 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ello?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

GODDAMIT HE LEFT AGAIN >:()

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

43 5/12 - 27 3/7 is the problem right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

43 5/12 = 5 is on the top 12 is on the bottom 24 7/12= 7 on top 12 on bottom.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

what is the second number? 24 7/12? or 27 3/7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

huh..

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

the problem you typed a while ago was 43 5/12 - 27 3/7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The prbolem is 43 5 __ 12 27 7 ____ 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

43 and 27 are both whole numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh god,please help me , I'm in trouble :(

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

oh....then you're right if it's 27 7/12 except it's 190/12..not plain 190...then just divide by a common factor to simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait wait what>!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There's more,I know how to simplify but divide by a common factor, wtf is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

190 ____ 12 That is my answer,what now,simplify?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

it's just 190/12...simplified is 95/6...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how the hell did you do taht?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

95/6 damm..

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

well you have 190/12 right? to simplify...think of a number that those two numbers can be divided to

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

correct...divide 190 by 2..that's 95...divide 12 by 2...it's 6...so 95/6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

amirite?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x100=200 dammit

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2x95?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

no...190 divided by 2...you're looking for a simplest term where in the term can no longer be simplified

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You sure that's the answer,my teacher will be pissed.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

weren't you asked to simplify it? if not then dont...you might be doing more than asked...it's just a mathematical tradition to simplify when possible

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well,could you help me with another problem,might be easier 22 7 - 4- 7 22 - 4 7/8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it says write each differense in simplest form

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

then you simplify...95/6 is the answer in the first one..as for this second one...please write in one line...i think ill understand it better

OpenStudy (anonymous):

22 - 4 7/8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So basically a whole number which is 22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Subtracted by 4 7/8

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

write in one line...like what you did a while ago in 43 7/12 - 27 7/12 thing

OpenStudy (amistre64):

4th grade tends to be younger than 13 .....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7 4- 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Better?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

is it 22 - 4 7/8?yes or no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

you can do this the way we did before...therre is another way which is faster but we can just use the previous way for consistency..which would you like?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fast if you want

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

okay...first transform 22 to a mixed number...to transform these things, first you must understand that 22 = 21 + 8/8 so....22 = 21 8/8 yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm no omfg, math is so hard.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

told you let's just do the first one for consistency =)))) let's break down the transforming to mixed method...your whole number is 22... 22 = 21 + 1 correct? 1 can be written in many ways.. one is in fraction form...if in fraction form the numerator must be the same as the denominator so 1 = 1/1= 2/2= 3/3 = 4/4 = 8/8 are you following? we will change 1 to 8/8 because the second number's denominator is 8 so that we can subtract faster, it would be easier if their denominators are the same...so 22 = 21 + 8/8 21 + 8/8 = 21 8/8 do you get it now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait so,can that also be 1 whole?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8/8= 1 whole right?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I still dont really quite understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How is 22 becoming an 21?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

22 = 21 + 1 right? and 1 = 8/8...do you get those?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm cfonused about 22 = 21 + 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that 21+1 = 22 though

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

they're the same...so what are you getting confused about?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

22 - 4 /78 so whats the asnwer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 17?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

will you like to use the previous way instead? /:) just transform 4 7/8 to improper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because 4 and 7/8 is close to 1 whole so 4+1 = 5?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Umm let's see.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whole x denominaotr

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 8x4=32+7=39.... 22-39?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

no..it's 22 - 39/8..do you know about LCDs?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

welll first...the denominator of a whole number is 1...so it's 22/1 - 39/8..

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

next...think of a number that can be divided both by 1 and 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh god..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1 and 8? pellet man

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what the flutter
