What is upwelling and why is it important to the marine ecosystem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Natural upwellings are produced by wind stress over the ocean under certain conditions that favor a divergence of surface waters (proximity of a coastline or of the Equator)

upwelling is the process that occurs in the oceans in which cold water from the depths arise to the surface. the importance of this is that this cold water is bringing to the surface incredible amounts of nutrients that have been accumulating during the whole year. usually it is dead organic matter such as diatoms, algae, phyto or zooplancton in general, debris that is the word. This happens usually in winter, one of the most important for us in europe is the upwelling of marseilles. it is important because the whole ecosystem builds upon this food, fishes that feed on this krill up to the bigger species. fisheries depend on this process entirely.
