What is the approximate surface area of this pencil? (Use 3 point one four for pi. Round your answer to the nearest whole number.) A pencil that comes to a point at the end is shown. The part of the pencil that does not come to a point is fifteen centimeters long. The diameter is zero point six centimeters. The top of the pencil, which comes to a point, has a slant height of 2 centimeters.

Please could someone explain to me how to do it? I am really having trouble

Directrix (directrix):

I am thinking that the pencil can be thought of as a right circular cylinder topped by a right circular cone. See the uploaded image.

Directrix (directrix):

The task is to find the surface area of a cylinder with base radius .3 cm and height 15 cm and then to that to add the lateral area of a right circular cone with base radius .3 cm and slant height 2 cm.. Note: the surface area of the cylinder will include only one base along with the lateral area of the cylinder.

Directrix (directrix):

Pencil Surface Area ----------------- 2 pi r h + B where B is the area of one circular base 2 pi (.3) (15) + pi (.3)^2 Exposed Surface Area of Cylinder is: 9.09 π Lateral Area of Cone ============= LA = pi r L pi (.3)2 LA of Cone = .6 π Surface Area of Entire Pencil = 9.09 π + .6π = 9.69 π square centimeters --> Answer
