Jordan wrote the following steps to simplify the expression: 5x – (3x + 2 + 4x). Step Mathematical Statement Justification 0 5x – (3x + 2 + 4x) Given 1 5x – (3x + 4x + 2) Associative Property of Addition 2 5x – (7x + 2) Combine Like Terms 3 5x – 7x – 2 Distributive Property 4 (5x – 7x) – 2 Associative Property of Addition 5 –2x – 2 Combine Like Terms Which step of justification is incorrect, and what should the justification for that step be to simplify the expression? Answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Step 1; Commutative Property of Addition Step 2; Associative Property of Addition Step 3; Associative Property of Multiplication Step 4; Commutative Property of Multiplication

OpenStudy (experimentx):

3 distributive property

OpenStudy (experimentx):

not sure about 2 ... i think that would be operation between two elements

the steps i commented are my answer options the graph when i posted my question is confusing maybe i should type them out hold on

5x – (3x + 4x + 2) -Associative Property of Addition 5x – (7x + 2) - Combine Like Terms 5x – 7x – 2 - Distributive Property (5x – 7x) – 2 - Associative Property of Addition which of the above justifications is incorrect for the equation and what should it be? answers; Step 1; Commutative Property of Addition Step 2; Associative Property of Addition Step 3; Associative Property of Multiplication Step 4; Commutative Property of Multiplication

OpenStudy (experimentx):

5x – (7x + 2) - Combine Like Terms it seems like operation between two elements in a group, i don't think there is justification like (combine like terms) ...it's an operation, addition operation to be precise

OpenStudy (experimentx):

and also Step 3; Associative Property of Multiplication ==> doesn't seem like associative at all it tells ax(bxc) = (axb)xc ... how could step 3 be associative property of multiplication, it seems rather like distributive property under addition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure this lesson was on proofs and it kinda confused me D=

OpenStudy (experimentx):

algebra is quite headache than the rest. simple yet hard to grasp
