Will plate tectonics eventually turn off and cease to operate on Earth? Why or why not?
Plate tectonics are driven by the thermodynamics of the lava underneath the plates--it is possible that it will eventually stop (once the core cools off completely). However, last time I read about this, they were projecting that this would happen AFTER the sun will supernova and destroy the planet anyway.
when did they predict that about the sun?
no because they go in a repetitive movement and sometimes shifts into each other
Thanks
the sun will die in ~5 billion years To be exact, it wont supernova (it doesn't have enough mass) but will become a red dwarf--in doing this it will expand at first and devour the earth.
But the earth will possibly survive - just not life on it. The Kepler telescope recently discovered an exoplanet orbiting a red dwarf which was probably temporarily engulfed when the star became a red dwarf.
