What is the importance of the minor inorganic salts to living organisms?
Hi Adam1994 - "Inorganic salts are sources of essential ions eg. sodium, chlorine, potassium etc. Important functions include - metabolic processes/regulation include transport to/from cells, muscular contraction, conduction of nerve impulses, acid base & water balance, cell membrane polarity, coagulation, energy release (inc. ATP synthesis) and as a component of bone tissue." These aren't my words - I found it here: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_function_of_inorganic_salts_in_the_body Hope this helps
i cant see how sodium and chloride ae minor inorganic salts... i thought more in the direction of iron, selenium, zinc etc. having said that theu are usually cofactors for enzymes, owing to their reducing capacities (like the heme moiety of hemoglobin)
in case of plants we can observe some defect due to lack of inorganic salt. these salts found to be associated with some important enzymes involved in metabolism
