why neutral atom can only be attracted not show repulsion??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Atoms which have unfilled octate have tendency to combine with others to attain a stable form by fulfilling the octate. But, atoms which already have 8 electrons in their valance shell do not show any tendency to combine with others. As we know about the inert gases. So, in a way they are not attracted by others elements.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well its not true if we keep source nearby it neutral atom get attracted

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Suppose the source is a magnet. And we keep iron filings nearby it, then they get atrracted to the magnet although they were neutral in the first place.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

iron fillings contain charge in it always i guess.. (:

OpenStudy (mani_jha):

That is a result of polarization, isn't it? A neutral atom contains equal amounts of both charges. When it is placed near a charged substance, the charges in the neutral substance opposite to that charge assemble near the charged substance. So, the net result is an attraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't get the question well, the atom is attracted by what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

agree with mani that is the exact ans of this qn :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

go through it @konchana u ll get wat mani is tryin to say and wat i asked here ok http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/4f7d88dde4b09f22231c16b1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Initially iron fillings are not charged as I knew. Infact, none of the materials are charged at the first place. I agree with mani as well.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh means ironfilling dont contain charge? as i also dunno but when i did xperiment i remeber it contains just a querry of mine r u sure??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is exactly what i was going to post but i wasn't sure u meant attracted by another charged particle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

np freind :)

OpenStudy (mani_jha):

A magnetic field always has an electric field perpendicular to it. They're two faces of the same coin - They go hand in hand. So, I don't think you can say that iron filings don't have charge. They've got unpaired electrons, after all.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was actually sticking to the loss of electrons and thereby gaining positive charge. And about polarization and unpaired electrons, obviously these are right. Agreed Mani. :)
