Can somebody teach me hybridization of simple compounds. Like for sp,sp2 and sp3. Like I know water is sp3 but I don't understand why. It's a bent shape, right? So shouldn't it be sp?
think about the electron pairs sticking off the oxygen. That's a total of two hydrogens and two electron clouds. That's the reason it's bent becuase the electron pairs(clouds ) push the other sides down. This gives a total of 4 distinct orbitals which is why it's sp3. One s plus 3 p's equal 4 hybrid sp3 orbitals.

Is it possible to just write out the electron configurations and somehow get the hybridizations?
There is a simple formula to find hybridization hyb=No. of surrounding atoms+0.5[no. of valence electrons-1*MA-2DA-3*TA-Anionic charge+cationic charge] this is a universal formula to find hybridization of any simple formula...
