The media does not always focus on the "top news" and what really is important in the world all the time.. why do you think that is? For example, there have been plenty of stories similar to the story of Trayvon Martin, but only this story made headlines..

Media is bias. Simple as that. They choose what they want you to hear and see.

Is there a way to change the way the media portrays the news? How can we learn about what is happening in the world in a non bias way?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Changing the way media portrays news? In my opinion, no. Unless there is new management. Well to be unbiased about an issue read news from many different angles. Ex. Palestine and Israel issue. Look at articles from both sides. Or if you know an unbiased media source, then good. Use that.

I still want to know why American Idol updates are considered news! Media bias is largely responsible, but the media also responds to what people want to see. If everyone complained that American Idol was a topic on the news, it would never make it. On the other hand, some stories aren't a regular part of the evening news because the stations are owned by corporate giants who won't let the truth make it to television. Look at who owns the major media - ABC, NBC, CBS, ABC... http://www.freepress.net/ownership/chart Read: Toxic Sludge is Good For You: Lies, Damn Lies and the Public Relations Industry Watch: The Insider (Russell Crowe, Al Pacino)

That is exactly what I am talking about. When the oscars were on I was on Twitter and the CNN Top News were who won what?! How is that the news that is important? It is too bad that they decide to report on what they think others want to hear. I am sure a lot happened during the 3+ hours that the Oscars were on..

@Ishap, did you share this feedback with CNN? It is often assumed that for every letter or email a customer sends, there are many others who don't take the time to share feedback - so your comments might go further than you think.

There is something that we call in the media industry as "media ecology." This states that since the media is one of the main sources of information, it filters the contents it shows to the public. It chooses what events are newsworthy--even if those events are really not the "top news" as we would call it.
