Find the measure of angle P in the triangle below

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is the triangle i need to figure out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how to use cos and sin?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

kind of im beginning on it. most problems, no i have no clue they have t be extremely short and simple

OpenStudy (radar):

It is a right triangle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

meaning.....?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cos p = opposite/ hypotnus

OpenStudy (radar):

Meaning you can use the law of sin for right triangle. Specifically Sin P =48/60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats it? 48/60?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cos p = 48/60

OpenStudy (radar):

Yes for sin for Cos use 36/60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you

OpenStudy (radar):

Maybe I have it backwards.

OpenStudy (radar):

Sin P = opposite side (48) / hypotenuse (60)

OpenStudy (radar):

Did you get 53.13 degrees?

OpenStudy (radar):

Even though it is not indicated a right triangle, it is because:\[48^{2}+36^{2}=60^{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm actually stuck on the same problem, what do you do with P? In other words, how'd you get 53.13?

OpenStudy (radar):

I would first solve for the Sin of P Which is equal to One of the sides divided by the hypotenuse (it is a right triangle) Let me check my notes as there was some debate whether to solve for cosine vs sine. Be back in a minute.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay no worries! The subject is focused on Law of Cosines so I would assume to use Cosine.

OpenStudy (radar):

It is sine theta it is equal to opposite side divided by the hypotenuse or for this triangle is 48/60 or giving it a value of 0.8 Now take the inverse sin of 0.8 to get the measure of the angle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh okay; understood! Thank you so much!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually one more thing... how would you find angle Q?

OpenStudy (radar):

Did you get 53.13 degrees for angle P? Better yet is that one of your answer options?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's an open answer so I'm not given choices.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes I did!

OpenStudy (radar):

Angle Q is the right angle (90 degrees) and there are several methods to use. One easy way is to sa y, Sin Q = 60/60 = 1, and inverse sin 1 = 90 degrees, but to be sure do this:

To do..?
